Would Trevor Linden's number be retired? Is so, when?

The Canadian Press is reporting that Trevor Linden, the 19-year-veteran and icon for the Vancouver Canucks, will announce on June 11 that he is retiring.

Linden leads the Canucks all-time record in assists and is second in goals, but his influence goes far beyond numbers. Since being drafted out of Medicine Hat in 1988 as the No. 2 pick behind Mike Modano, Linden has been the cornerstone of the Vancouver club.

Linden's most memorable hockey moment probably came in 1994, when he led the Vancouver Canucks to game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals against the heavily favoured New York Rangers. In that epic game, Linden scored both goals for the Canucks in a losing cause.

Linden is also instrumental in his community work, being voted as the winner for the King Clancy award for his humanitarian work in 97, and was a co-recipient for the NHL Foundation Player Award for community services this year.

Linden's #16 will be retired, in my opinion. When do you think it will happen?

The Canucks have announced that they will hold a special ceremony on Dec 17 when the Canucks play the Edmonton Oilers. During the game, they will officially retire Trevor Linden's #16, making him the second player to have his number (the other is Stan Smyl, #12) officially retired. (the late Wayne Maki's #11 is no longer used, but is not officially retired)

Linden has indicated that he does not want to be involved as a figure-head of the franchise. If he is to be involved with the Canucks, just like the way he is as a player, he wants to contribute to the organization. Francisco Acqunini, the Canucks owner, has been a Canuck fan all along, so I think he understands the value of Linden as a player, and understands that Linden can play a role in the hockey club.

Naturally, for the amount of community work Linden has done, I think he will be a wonderful addition for the Canucks in that capacity - to plant more grassroot programs, to open hockey schools around the province for under-privilege kids, etc... I think Trevor will thrive in such a role.

Linden always does so much for the Vancouver hockey community, and yet stay so low profile. That's what I like about him. I am glad to hear that he will stick around for the coming years.

The stories people are telling about Trevor Linden are just amazing... this morning, a guy called Team 1040 to tell of a story where Linden, Robert Kron, and Petr Nedved, played street hockey with the listener when he was 10 outside the house the players were living in back in the day (Kron and Nedved were new to Vancouver at the time, and were boarding with Linden). While Nedved and Kron were half-heartedly playing, Linden was actually showing the listener and his buddies tips of stick-handling, on how to protect the puck. When the caller later made a move that actually deked Petr Nedved, Nedved was not pleased, to say the least...

I think it is hard for Vancouverites to forget Linden and his stories. I just read the news that he might plan to get into Canucks management. No more info was given. Sounds like he is going to involve in Canucks for years to come, not on the ice of course.

    Linden, we will miss you!

I guess he will be hanging around in Vancouver, doing charity work.

Linden had shown great leadership in Canucks for years. Too bad he couldn't bring home a Stanley Cup.

The right thing to do for the Canucks organization is to immediately retire Trevor Linden's number... but it is not the first time that Linden is not receiving the proper treatment that he deserves. I think they will let the off season and pre-season go, have the first month of the season played out (in October), before dedicating an evening where they will raise Trevor Linden's heralded #16 to the rafters along with Stan Smyl's #12.

Agree. To me, Linden is the biggest hero of Canucks in the last decade. And it is unfortunate his career wasn't as glorious as it should be.
