Would the IOC stop the croos-nation Olympic torch relay before May?
black-shoulder ( Score Rank: #2 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) black-shoulder  |  was scored on 30-Apr-2008 (160 days ago)
As many of you may have heard, the cross-nation Olympic torch relay this year has been met with wild demonstrations and protests. In London, a man tried to wrestle the torch away from the torch carrier while another tried to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher. In France, the torch was actually put out 4 different times, and was met with heated demonstrations all over.

This probably was NOT what China was looking for when it planned for this cross-nation relay. The constant disruption has left some people suggesting that the IOC should pull the plug and restrict the relay to stops in China. What do you think?

It's still going on, and the protests are still going on. China has managed to find enough "supporters" to out-crowd the protesters, preventing them from getting anywhere near the torch.

I agree with most of you that it is hard to completely stop the relay. And even for people who don't like China hosting the next Olympics, would want the relay to finish peacefully.

It'd be a first if it was completely stopped.

It's a very important tradition for IOC which will surely try the best to complete it - even not disclosing the route.

It just passed the most damaging location: SF. It should be fairly safe for the rest of the relay.

No way the relay will be stopped. China will do everything it can to make it continue.

FACE means a lot for Chinese. The Chinese gov would feel embarrassed if IOC stops the relay.

I understand... but at the same time, the IOC is taking a huge black eye in terms of its PR right now with protests breaking out everywhere. People are second and third-guessing why the games were awarded to China in the first place. And the Chinese aren't exactly showing off well when the relay is being ridiculed all over the world.

The best save-face strategy may be to scale down the relay, or restrict it to states where both the IOC and China know that they would not be met with thousands of angry protesters. Or, just bring them back to China...
