Would the Cdn government be lowering/refunding passport fees in 2008?

The auditor general has just reported today that the Canadian government is over-charging people when they apply for their Canadian passports.

According to the law, the government can only charge its citizens at cost for these types of services provided. But due to whatever the reason, the auditor general has found that the government has overcharged Canadians as much as 25.3 million dollars (Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada calculated it was only $13.3 million). Regardless, that is a lot of money that has been overcharged.

With that in mind, do you think the government will issue a refund for citizens who have recently applied for a passport? Or, would they just lower the price for new applicants? Or, they would just continue to overcharge?

If you are a politician you learn to overcharge, overstate, and otherwise take as much as possible and give as little as possible. Since when does the gov'ts give breaks??? Only to criminals, illegals, perverts. No they will find a way to smooth over the publicity of the fact of overcharging, and come up with an excuse. or some politician will come up with a diversionary use for the funds to keep the money. Read my lips: NO REFUNDS.

refund? Not likely. That's too much work. Lowering fee is more economical. I vote for the lazy way.

I think the most likely outcome is that fees would stay the way it is. However, the only ripple in this is that it is a LAW that they can only charge the amount that covers the actual expense of the service... if a grassroot organization so wills, it can actually file a suit against the government and cause a whole lot of negative PR, be there an actual case or not. If sufficient pressure exists, and especially considering that we are still dealing with a minority government that wants to win some favour, the fees may be lowered.

wow .. $25.3 million dollars is a lot of money - may be enough to feed the Passport department for many years. personally i want a refund. realistic speaking, the gov won't bother but keep the money for themselves. they won't even lower the rate when citizens are still willing to pay.
