What is ZiiTrend?
Would other Cdn provinces pass laws to seize drunk drivers' cars?

The Ontario provincial government has just started enforcing a law amendment that would allow authorities to sell or give away a car owned by a driver that has been involved in drinking-driving at least twice within a 10-year-span.

Drinking-driving has long been linked as one of the major causes of traffic injuries and fatalities, particularly in the young adult age group. In Ontario, about 1/4 of driving-related fatalities are related to drunk drivers. M.A.D.D., an organization against drinking-driving, is estimating that over 1/3 of the motor vehicles deaths in Canada are related to drinking-driving.

Do you think any Canadian provinces/territories will put forward a law similar to that in Ontario in 2008 (regardless of whether or not the law completes its legislation process)?

I agree it is a strange law. Maybe most drink and drive offenders in Canada drive luxury cars? Let's say if I have a Marsarati, it will really hurt if it get seized.

On the surface, the law amendment seems to be a fairly good idea. However, I think this is more of a public gesture than anything. Like Goog says, I think a heavy fine, or maybe mandatory jail sentences, would be true, hard-line deterrents.

Seizing cars? Why not just fine the offender a fixed amount of $$$? This is weird.

it may be quite hard to execute the law. what if the car is not 100% owned by the drunk drivers? it's hard to "fairly" seizure a car in this way. a poor drunk driver may never own his/her own car, and a rich drunk driver may not mind giving away the car.

yet i like the law as it impresses a stronger message to the public.
