Would Iran begin building nuclear weapons/warheads by the end of 2008?
black-shoulder ( Score Rank: #2 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) black-shoulder  |  will close on 31-Dec-2008 (38 days from now)
Iran has just announced today (Apr 8) that it is massively expanding its existing nuclear program to enrich uranium by tripling its number of centrifuges (adding 6000 to the existing 3000).

While skeptics believe that the number claimed by the government is larger than reality, the re-opening of the expansion to its nuclear is still in violation with what Iran has agreed to with the UN.

With a serious increase in centrifuges, Iran may be able to do more than just build nuclear reactors to produce electricity, as the government claims was the reason for the expansion. With that in mind, do you think Iran would begin building nuclear warheads/weapons by the end of this year?

Today a new report by the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says Iran has failed to come clean on its uranium enrichment program and that it has serious concerns over alleged research into nuclear weapons.

The critical report released to the UN Security Council on Monday is likely to buttress calls by the US and other Western countries for new sanctions on Iran. Iranian officials say they have cooperated with the IAEA and will continue to enrich uranium for future power generation, not for military purposes.

It is anything but for energy in Iran. Even if they don't have any intention of building nuclear weapons (or even if they actually lack the resources and the technology to do so), the fact that they have some of these infra-structures would make Iran more threatening, and that may increase their clout both against the western countries, and prowess among the middle eastern countries. I think the number of centrifuges they are increasing is exaggerated, but definitely they are up to "no good," at least by our western standards.

From Iran point of view, it makes sense to have some military power to defend their turf.
