Would Canadian envoy Robert Fowler return to safety before 2009?

Confusion is added to the rapidly growing mystery surrounding UN's special envoy to Niger Robert Fowler. The Canadian, along with at least one more diplomat, was abducted earlier in the week.

Front des Forces de Redressement, a rebel group in Niger, initially claimed on its website that the diplomats were abducted by the group in response to the Canada's support to the Niger government. The same website, however, made another announcement the next day, denying that taking hostages would be a part of the group's strategy to make their voices heard. The group has called for the peaceful release of Fowler and the other diplomat, to "Canada or to the UN" as soon as possible.

All the confusion set aside, do you think Fowler would be returned to safety before the end of the year?

The likelihood that the envoy is killed is very unlikely, in my opinion. I think, if the group has claimed that it has kidnapped the envoy, and then back-tracked the claim, it probably means that they DO have the envoys captured... Probably some behind-the-scene negotiations have taken place already, and that the envoys would be released before Christmas, hence the change in tune...
