In less than a week's time, the Montreal campus of University of Quebec has been put to a scare: after an armed man was seen earlier in the week strolling the campus, a box that contains materials police describes as "can be used as a bomb" was found in a bathroom. Portions of the campus have been closed in both incidents.
These incidents bring back disturbing memories of the campus shooting less than a decade ago where 13 female students were shot dead. South of the border, the ghosts of the Virginia Tech shooting also continue to haunt many. Like many other North American universities, U of Quebec (Montreal) has an open campus where people can walk in and out rather easily. This raises the concern that intruders can easily enter a campus to do harm. Do you think a gun/bomb/explosive incident will happen in a Canadian university campus in 2008 (incidents like this one at U of Q would count)?

I've always enjoyed a university campus where people can take a leisure walk in the open area, where you can study under the sun on a green lawn of grass... I hope incidents like these won't change that for our future students...
