Gates just announced that Microsoft is ahead of its next-gen Windows development schedule, and plan to release Windows 7 some time next year. Let's predict what that "some time" might be.

Since we cannot verify the result until the end of 2009, I am making this a casual prediction.

I hope Microsoft will just repackage XP and called it something else. That way, we can still get XP machines.

So soon after a Vista release? With microsoft's history of product announcements? Yeah right!

I suspect Windows 7 (if it is going to be released in 2009) is going to be a server product to replace Win2003 server. It is kind of stupid to release a Vista replacement so soon.

Maybe the new OS will completely integrate with Windows Live services?! But that's not a good reason to upgrade.

This announcement makes very little sense to me. What does Gate want to accomplish by announcing a new version so soon?! People are not willing to upgrade to vista, why would anyone want to upgrade from Vista to Windows 7?!

What kind of new features can Microsoft possibly put into the new version to make people want to upgrade?

Gates made that announcement simply wants people to give up their XP installation sooner. Hopefully that will help Vista sales a little bit and "move people forward" in their upgrade.
