Will YouTube put pre-roll ads into their videos before end of Q3 2008?

Google still hasn't made up its mind on how to make money from YouTube. Here is a quote from:
http://technology.timeson...

"Google has said that it is still unsure how to make money from YouTube, the enormously popular video-sharing website it owns, but hopes to be able to do so soon.

Eric Schmidt, the search giant's chief executive, said it "seemed obvious" that Google should be able to generate "significant amounts of money" from YouTube, on which hundreds of millions of videos are watched every day, but that as yet it hadn't figured out how to go about it. "

The media has already talked about YouTube putting pre-roll ads (ads that play before the actual video) since last year. But so far, it YouTube hasn't officially making this as its revenue source.

Let's predict if YouTube will monetize YouTube by showing pre-roll ads before end of Q3 2008?

It is interesting to see how Google will make money from YouTube.

There's another prediction about putting video ads in the main search page, which I though was unlikely to occur.
I suspect that Google won't put pre-video ads into video, but may put additional ad elements throughout the page. I.e. a "sponsored video" section much like their "sponsored links" section on their main page.
To be honest, the intelligent ad agencies are already using youtube intelligently, by putting up internet videos that are entertaining and attractive to video browsers. All Google needs to do is come up with a "pay-for-high-placement" option.

What's worth thinking about in relation to pre-rolls is that YouTube's gone for the in video overlays for the moment. You can see them on some partner videos (i.e. those that have been approved). With this in mind I'd say they're not likely to change their monetisation strategy just yet.

People are pretty much blind to banners and HP takeovers, so pre-rolls are one way to go. But Google are still in a bit of a dither about it, so it's unlikely it will happen before Q3.

Besides, you want more immersive campaigns. Pre-rolls are a bit old school and smack of offline guys trying to figure out online through making the latter more like the former. It's the standard 'shout at people' approach of offline. Tell 'em what they want, rather than listening.

YouTube need to be a bit more imaginative with their monetizing.

I read somewhere that Google is developing video crawling software which attempt to extract the semantics and objects within the video. If that works, then Google can show context sensitive ads in real time based on what is inside the video. Let's say when Jessica Alba is holding a can of pop on a beach, then the ads will probably show the new Pepsi or Budweiser campaign.

If it works, then it is a lot better than pre-roll ads.

I am not really bothered by pre-roll ads. Maybe I am used to the way commercials are shown on TV.

I am sure Google will come up with a smarter way to show ads. Showing pre-roll ads will definitely hurt the YouTube traffic. Google has pretty deep pocket now, and can afford to let YouTube run for a while without making a dime.
