Watch out Google -- Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales hopes that Wikia Search, a project he spearheads, will break Google's domination of the world's Internet search engine market. Industry statistics showed over 90 percent of Internet searches in the United States are done through the three firms - MSN, Yahoo and Google. So I do doubt that he could break the monopoly. Neither the vertical search engines can lower the position of the 3 general search sites.

Not even close. It won't even be a top 5. It does have its potential. Some of the features really stand out, like the wiki page and forum for search queries. If it can get the same amount of support as wikipedia, I think it will threaten other commercial SE's.

It takes years for Google to beat Yahoo as a search engine. Even though Wikia is super good, it still takes time to beat the giants (MSN, ASK, etc).

however it may be perfect as a search engine for kids in school. our next generation may use it more than Google.

Why do schools decide to use Wikia Search instead of Google? Wouldn't school use whatever is the most popular?

I can see the open source community using it more though.

i expect Wikia Search is well tailored for knowledge websites, and cut all the adult content. it may best suit the needs of elementary / high schools.

Looks like Wikia Search is getting negative reviews everywhere:

To be fair, I think this project is to build an open source search engine. Users patience and contribution is an important part of it. It is unrealistic to expect it to be better than Google in day one.

It is tough, but it is possible. I tried the alpha version and the search result is quite good.
