Will WHO issue a traveler's alert for people intending to visit Hong Kong?
was scored on 2008-04-30 EDT
The H1 strain of flu has been spreading in Hong Kong. All kindergarten and elementary schools have been suspended, and some secondary schools have volunteered to shut themselves down as well. Some medical professionals are waning that the spread of this epidemic is even faster than that of SARS in 2003. In light of this, do you think the WHO (World Health Organization) will issue a traveler's alert/warning to visitors intending to visit Hong Kong?

The flu season seems to be coming and going... while minor outbreaks are continuing still, with cases of young children getting seriously ill or even dying, no travel alert was issued.

Olympics is upcoming and single most important task the Chinese gov. i bet WHO would not even issue a traveler's advisory.

Interesting take, and I agree that China will try very hard to look good prior to and during the Olympics... the problem is, if the epidemic is really going out of hand (and China cannot really control that, can they?), WHO will feel the political pressure from many of the NATO countries to put a squeeze on things...

The other factor is: a traveler's alert does not have to go beyond or into the Olympics... the flu season, thankfully, is not too long, so they can give the advisory soon to save their butts from political pressure, and then lift it later when the flu season passes.

Don't forget that China has "paid" some big bucks to have someone leading the WHO now (forgot her English name here)... Just like the way she handled SARS back in the day, she will try her utmost to minimize the seriousness of the outbreak, and take the lives of people lightly unless things really, really go out of hand.

My prediction is that, should the outbreak continue, a traveler's advisory will be issued to cover everyone's butt. But a true warning or alert that would tell travelers to NOT go to Hong Kong? Anything that would hurt China's financial well being would not be done... sadly, it's more politically-driven than it is health-driven.
