Will US completely ban Chinese toy imports from China in Q1 2008?

China is the manufacturer of almost all products we are using. Their qualities vary and sometimes even violate our health standard. The imported toys are now believed to be toxic and endanger our children. At a election campaign stop here on Wednesday, presidential candidate Barack Obama took a hard line on the import of toys from China, saying that he now favors an outright ban. Can US really say NO to Chinese toy imports?

Obama just bashing China for the sake of his campaign. Nothing a politician wouldn't do to get himself elected. It is easy to win the voters' heart by crucifying whoever made a mistake on the headline at the moment. China just got caught at the wrong moment. I don't like/hate Chinese imports. I have to admit I owe it to countries like China to be able to afford all the great stuff I am having now. It is kind of silly to punish another country and think it will improve the quality of future imports.

There is no way that this will happen. Sure there are a few bad apples coming out of China, but when lumped with all of the toys that get produced in china the dangerous ones are a very small percentage. Americans want cheap stuff, there are external costs associated with cheap production which the consumer does not see until it is too late.

Yeah, it is too easy to blame Chinese manufacturers for all the toxic toys. It is American's toy companies that hand out the product specifications, and these companies have equal responsibility in enforcing proper QC to the end products once it arrives on US soil. The title of this prediction also assumes Chinese manufacturers are to blame.

Instead of banning import of toys from China, our government should put in place better regulation. And yeah, we will likely to pay more for our toy if there are more QC, meaning higher cost.

Kids nowadays favor video games more than traditional toys. Maybe intoxication of the mind instead of the body is more acceptable by our society. Enough talking, time to get back to my Wii game.

Banning import from China is a bad solution. Forcing Chinese manufacturers to improve its quality is more likely. However, it also means the cost of manufacturing will increase. So we have to prepare to pay more for our toys next year.

All toys manufacturers are importing from China. It's impossible for all of them to switch to another source in the first half of 2008.

If we are so concern about the quality of Chinese toys, why not make it ourselves in the states? Our blue collar workers would like to make a few bucks too. I suppose everyone wants to buy things at half the price, yet still bitch about the quality..

No I don't think so. US market is driven by price. As long as it is cheaper to import from China, US will keep buying to help the high inflation economy. IMHO, US won't "announce" a ban, but she may execute a more subtle plan.
