The controversial chemical bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical additive commonly used in plastic materials, which include our water bottles and baby bottles (bottles with a #7 recycling sign is an indication that it contains BPA). Conflicting research reports have indicated that BPA can be a harmful substance that causes many health problems. It is also suspected to be a carcinogen.

Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) is one of the first companies that have removed all BPA-containing bottles from their retail stores. Canada is now considering a "hazard" label to be added with any products that contain BPA. US and European studies, however, continue to be conflicting regarding this chemical.
