Will the US or EU ban the use of BPA in plastic bottles?
black-shoulder ( Score Rank: #3 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) black-shoulder  |  will close on 31-Dec-2008 (78 days from now)
The controversial chemical bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical additive commonly used in plastic materials, which include our water bottles and baby bottles (bottles with a #7 recycling sign is an indication that it contains BPA). Conflicting research reports have indicated that BPA can be a harmful substance that causes many health problems. It is also suspected to be a carcinogen.

Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) is one of the first companies that have removed all BPA-containing bottles from their retail stores. Canada is now considering a "hazard" label to be added with any products that contain BPA. US and European studies, however, continue to be conflicting regarding this chemical.

Do you think the US and/or EU will ban the use of BPA by the end of 2008?

News from HK is suggesting that the HK officials are planning to ban the use of BPA in baby bottles... I guess more and more places will follow and begin banning this substance.

I went to Toys'r'us last weekend and notice all BPA baby bottles are being taken off the shelf. I think most plastic bottles products sales will suffer even for the BPA-free ones.

    Quoted from wikipedia about BPA:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bispheno...
"Some hormone disrupting effects in studies on animals and human cancer cells have been shown to occur at levels as low as 2–5 ppb (parts per billion). It has been claimed that these effects lead to health problems such as, in men, LOWERED SPERM COUNT and INFERTILE SPERM"

Guys, be very careful of what bottle you use...

The Canadian report seems pretty definitive and condemning to BPA, so Nalgene is voluntarily pulling back the use of BPA altogether. I think there will be enough pressure now for a ban of the substance.

Canada will soon release its research findings on BPA, and I think that would create some stir in both Europe and in the States regarding the use of BPA. If Canada's findings are extremely negative, I think there will be pressure to ban the substance altogether.

EU has traditionally be a little more "environmental conscious" than the US, so if the Canadian findings are somewhat ambivalent, I think it's more likely that the EU will put a ban on BPA, but not the US.

Question, what are the side effects of consuming BPA? I have some #7 bottles myself, and I am still using them.

Like I've said in the description of this prediction, the effects of BPA is still in dispute, but in mice, the chemical is known to cause infertility, birth defects, and may cause cancer as well. In humans, the suspicion is that BPA will lead to prostate and breast cancer.

The amount of BPA is "minimal" when the container is used to carry cold water. When using to hold hot water though, the amount of BPA released substantially increase.

      Hope this info helps.

black-shoulder, thanks for the info. Time for me to switch to stainless steel bottle/mug. I hope no one is going to tell me later that stainless steel is dangerous too.
