Will the Google non-GPS location service for GMap be a hit?
Homer ( Score Rank: #27 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) Homer  |  closed on 15-Feb-2008 (291 days ago)
Google just announced a mobile GMap location service which can locate a user's location within 10-city-block accuracy without using GPS. This service requires a user to install some new software in their cell phone. The good thing is no GPS is required.

According to Google, they said they don't "know" where I am, kind of implying that they don't keep track of my location. But I don't believe them. I think it will eventually lead to privacy issue just like the Facebook Beacon program.

After watching the Youtube demo, I think it will be very successful. Pressing "0" to see yourself in a map, what can get easier than this? Maybe not having to press any button would be it. But pressing one button is simple enough.

Not a hit until most people use 'smart' phones like iPhone. I expect it may gain higher popularity in non-America markets where most consumers use hi-end phones.

This thing is called MyLocation right? Looks pretty easy to use from the YouTube video. If it works well in the Washington state, I will use it too.

At least it makes GMap a lot more useful in the cell phone.
