Will Taiwan sign peace treaty with China in 2008?
miniMe ( Score Rank: #101 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) miniMe  |  will close on 31-Dec-2008 (122 days from now)
Taiwan's newly-elected president is calling for a peace treaty with China to reduce tensions across the Taiwan strait. The president-elect, Ma Ying-jeou, says there will be no negotiations on a peace treaty while China still aims missiles at the island. But he says he hopes after economic ties are broadened, there can be discussions on a cross-strait security deal. China is yet to officially comment on his win.

Ma is not aiming for a Unity Treaty which is still in big debate in Taiwan. Will Ma's suggestion be considered by Beijing? Can Beijing recognise Taiwan's sovereign claim?

Ma has expressed very clearly his desire to maintain the stance of "One China, two different interpretations." China is fine with that stance, and certainly would want to maintain a decent working relationship so far. In my opinion, Ma will not visit China during his first term, and would only make economic agreements with mainland China (e.g. for tourists, for trades, etc.)

I agree that it might not happen in 2008. That is a big rush.

Even if Ma wants this to happen, it won't be in 2008. He has enough internal problems to deal with this year.

This morning an editorial suggested that Mainland China should consider a mild approach toward Ma's government. Ma claims to support One-China policy. If Ma still fails to advance the relationship with China, it will cast a big uncertain to the future of Taiwan. I believe it is a golden chance for China to sign some treaty with Taiwan.

In addition, Taiwan is suffering from high national debt and poor economy. Isn't it the best chance to show "mercy" from China?
