    I have never seen a big chain cutting its price. Maybe a huge recession will trigger something like that. I am still young, and haven't experienced anything like that.

    Unlikely. 1) inflation are going up due to USD$ dropping & oil price. 2) cutting price affects its high-class image (vs. Tim) and long term profitability. 3) it has monopolized the local market anyway. why bother cutting the price now!?

    It may do something else instead of a price war, e.g. royalty program, fancy gifts, etc.

    Last time I read about starbucks, they didn't do too well in Q3. Yes, of course if US goes into recession, then people will stop buying "fancy' coffee. Maybe McDonald's coffee isn't too bad during a recession. But then, starbucks reducing its price won't be very likely. But there is a chance it will have some kind of promotional discount?
