Will slotMusic, MP3's on microSD card, be a hit?
Homer ( Score Rank: #27 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) Homer  |  closed on 22-Oct-2008 (41 days ago)
This prediction is inspired by the recent announcement from SanDisk in deciding to start selling music on microSD cards on a USB sled.

"SanDisk's gambit, called "slotMuisc," has already been endorsed by four major music labels: EMI Music, Sony BMG, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group. Best Buy and Wal-Mart two major US music retailers, have also given SanDisk their blessing."

For the same reason that minidiscs weren't a hit; why bother having a load of little bits of storage medium floating around as well as a device? Jam it all in one thing. The key will be flash drives with more capacity, but that are physically smaller. These will allow devices to be smaller and cheaper, and with quicker access (none of that loading aftwork in coverflow mode).

I think the popularity would be much dependent on whether or not there are popular music players that use that format. Currently, i-pod is by far the most popular mobile music-playing device. Unless a product can actually knock i-pod out of its throne, AND it has to employ this micro-SD card format, the introduction itself would not mean much - not too many people buy CDs nowadays, and they aren't going to start buying microSD music "cards" either.

I am not an iPod user, I might find this concept appealing. To bad Apple doesn't care about a microSD slot.

At least every music microSD card will have the SanDisk logo on it. That's good for marketing. But I am not sure that the future for delivering music.

Contrary to that the article stated, I think MP3 on physical medium will live on for another 5 years.
