What is ZiiTrend?
Will more MLB teams sign celebrities to play in their pre-season games?

The New York Yankees have signed movie star/comedian Billy Crystal to a 1-day contract to allow him to play a pre-season game during spring training. The move was said to be one to "recognize" a celebrity who has long supported the team. Most critics say it is nothing more than a publicity grab (well, enough that it is mentioned here in Ziitrend.com, so I guess they are successful!)

Do you think more teams will follow suit and sign different celebrities to play in these meaningless games? (Thankfully, regular season will begin March 25)

Contrary to what many of the Ziibos are thinking, I don't think this is going to happen.

Celebrities have been brought to baseball games for ages - to throw the first pitch, to sing the national anthems, to sing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" during the 7th inning stretch, but never to actually suit up. Judging from the reaction from the US media, people were quite disgusted of this move by the Yankees. Some were mocking them by saying, "You don't see the Lakers asking Jack Nicholas to play point guard next to Kobe Bryant." And it's true... I don't think it will happen again this pre-season.

That's very interesting. Celebrities attract eyeballs back to MLB after a long season break. It's a pretty good idea. Which teams may do the same? NY Mets likely follows the same trick as his neighbor.
