Will Ma Ying-Jeou and Hu Jin-tao Meet in 2008?
black-shoulder ( Score Rank: User did not make predictions in the last 30 days ) black-shoulder  |  closed on 31-Dec-2008 (325 days ago)
Ma Ying-Jeou has just sworn in as the 4th elected president of Taiwan (Republic of China). Before and throughout the election campaign, Ma has vowed to establish more communication between the government in Taiwan and mainland China (People's Republic of China).

The same tone has been preached by Chinese president Hu Jin-Tao, who actually met the vice-president-elect last week in a non-political setting. The signs are somewhat promising that the two would eliminate the confrontational approach the Ma's predecessor, Chen Shui-Bian, has established.

That said, the two are still at odds over some fundamental issues, and these issues may well prevent an official meeting of the two. With that in mind, do you think the two leaders will meet in 2008, and if they do, at what capacity?

While recent levels of communication between the Communist party and KMD have been rising in level (e.g. vice-president-elect have just met Hu Jin-tao, and the party's president will meet Hu before the end of this month too), an official meeting between Ma and Hu involves a paradigm and fundamental conflict. The Communists still see KMD as a sub-ordinate, and KMD cannot submit to the Communist Party or it will leave a very bitter taste in the citizens of Taiwan. I think the two, even if they do meet, will play safe and meet in some informal capacities. Even more likely, IMHO, they will just send representatives and delegates to talk.

Not before the Olympics for sure. Why open a new can of worms. It is hard enough to manage the Olympics already. China doesn't need more opportunities for the world to report on the political situation between China and Taiwan.
