Will Internet Activity Ever Be Truly Anonymous?
azalelja ( Score Rank: #197 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) azalelja  |  closed on 10-Aug-2008 (65 days ago)
Nowadays, it is impossible to be 100% sure of your online privacy. As soon as you get online, there is a potential that one of the gateway or servers on the Internet is logging your activities with your IP and even your personal information.

Inspired by this article, I wonder if Internet activities will ever be truly anonymous?

It is hard to say. I think truly anonymous might be possible, but it comes at a price. You might have to pay extra monthly fee to your ISP for a total privacy plan.

impossible. when we access online, we go thru ISP; when we search, we go thru google; when we leave a message, we go on a public site.

Not to mention that sites like Google caches everything. Including your web pages, your account, your activities, your writings, your friends, etc. etc.

So, 10 years from now, it might not be too hard to find out what you said and what you did 10 years ago. So unlike some of the Internet-thriller movie which says "You are deleted!", I think "You are NEVER deleted." is more likely.

So be extra careful in what you say when you are blogging. It might haunt you 10 years later.

I don't mind my neighbours knowing who I am, so am I don't mind people knowing where I have been online either. As long as no one peeks into my online bank account, then that's good enough for me.

I agree with all of you. There is no way we can stay completely anonymous on the Internet unless you are a super hacker who can stop people from logging any of your activities. But for regular guy like me, I will have to live with that.

How can it be? As long as you require a service provider to give you the service (and I guess there will always be one, whether that be a private company, or by the state as some futuristic novels suggest), there will be ways to track who is doing what... Big brother is always going to be watching...

Getting on the Internet is like walking on the street. I don't think we should expect 100% privacy when you are out on the street right? Why should we set the same expectation for online activities?
