Will Dell announce an Apple Macbook Air competition in 2008?
goog ( Score Rank: User did not make predictions in the last 30 days ) goog  |  closed on 01-Jan-2009 (442 days ago)
Dell recently announced its first truly military-grade ruggedized laptop. It is a sign that this big OEM is moving into specialized laptop markets. You think Dell will release a ultra-thin laptop like Macbook Air to compete in the market on the other end of the spectrum?

Seems like Dell's direction has always been focused on functionality, rather than a "sexy" or "hip" appeal (okay, maybe the lime-coloured laptops are exceptions)... And I don't know how popular the Macbook Air is to begin with... is that a big enough piece of pie for Dell to even be attracted to?

Agree. Actually, the pie might not be big enough. I remember two years ago, Dell pushed out an ultra-light X-series model, that licensed one of the Samsung laptop design. Although the laptop looks very sexy, but sales didn't meet expectation. So, Dell dropped that product line completely and stick with more practical but uglier models. Actually, IMO, Dell's laptop looks okay, just not as sexy as Macbook Air. For instance, XPS 1330 looks pretty good as a light weight notebook.

will Dell make a ultra-thin laptop? i guess not for Dell this year. if you know the core value of Dell, it is concerned about cost-effectiveness for making such a fancy toy. if it costs too much to set up the factory line, why not it waits until Apple has helped develop the market big enough. then Dell will cover the lower-end of "ultra-thin" laptop's market.

And I am Apple .. no one can beat Apple's brand !!

More competitions mean more choices. That's a good thing for me.
