Liu, arguably China's most famous sports star, stunned the country when he withdrew from his heats at the National Stadium suffering from a crippling foot injury with the blanket coverage of the incident destined to become one of the Games defining moments.

His 2004 Olympic gold medal was China's first in a men's track and field event. Furthermore he is the first Chinese athlete to achieve the "triple crown" of athletics (World Record Holder, World Champion and Olympic Champion).

Liu will now return to Shanghai before planning an assault on the world title in 2009 and, potentially, the London 2012 Olympics.
