Will Chinese Gov Negotiate with Dalai Lama?
Arthur ( Score Rank: #27 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) Arthur  |  was scored on 04-Aug-2008 (33 days ago)
In Apr 2008, the Dalai Lama, starting his first foreign trip since unrest broke out in Tibet, renewed support for the Beijing Olympics and appealed to China not to brand him as a demon. At the same time, the US House of Representatives and Senate passed resolutions yesterday condemning China's crackdown on protests in Tibet and urging Beijing to enter into a dialogue directly with the Dalai Lama. Germany, Canada and other countries had expressed similar comments to China. In response, China claimed that she is ready talk if the independent movement gives up violence activities.

Will the Chinese gov negotiate with Dalai Lama on the Tibet issues? Will they never seat down to talk?

The chinese government is a lot more level-headed and pragmatic than most western media paint them at. I'd give it a 60% chance that there already ARE behind-the-scenes talks between the Dalai Lama (or his representatives) and members or representatives of the chinese government.

China will want to avoid all confrontation that can lead to possible political consequences. Maybe they will talk under the table, but not formally. Especially not before Olympics.

The Chinese government is extremely stubborn. Once it has publicly accuse Dalai Lama for being the one who plots for all the uprise in Tibet, there is no logical reason why they would back off from that accusation, and actually start to have peace talk with him. Much similar to the situation in Taiwan, China always claim she is ready to sit down and talk, but there is always a condition, and that condition is almost always something that the other side cannot accept.

Agree. The Chinese gov is still unable to accept different voices in the political setting.

Honestly, I really doubt the sincerity of both parties if they ever want to come to the table.

First of all, why would Dalai wants to talk to China? What is in it for him? And what can China offer Dalai that can pacify his people?

What the Chinese government wants is stability before Olympics. And any negotiation with Dalai Lama can be hard to control. The risk is too high. So, it is better to keep things as they are now.
