there are sevral issues why i stated never and that is a ww should the chinese gov sell the debt she bought from the us combined with the russian gov headed by putin (he was elected by the doma to actually keep his regime over the russian people) i recon putin likes the idea of red russia with free economy like in china so we're gonna be in ww @ worst and if not now then within 15-20 yrs. the russian chinese pact is on low gas for the outsider recon this will change rather soon. the us will have to go there because their economy is based on consumption - and war creates lotofit every time post war gave the economy a great push and that's also a great thingi to erase their debt - the only thingi preventing them from starting w china is their and russia's nuc arsenal also holding in mind that both russia and china don't even pee on their citizens, meaning if they're killed... sad mad but who says reality has to be sane?

America leadership in GDP is shrinking every year, as we change from a producing country to a Service country. Since the average life of many products are 5 to 8 years, and as we continure to produce less and less, the decline of gdp in america shrinks and China leaps ahead. 4 years ago china's GDP was 22% +/- of America's GDP that has increased to better than 33% in less than 3 years (2007 stats not in yet.) so at that rate it would take about 18 years. However, The latest figures will show a much greater increase than that when the current Gdp figures are tallied. I predict China will take the lead by 2018, Sooner if America cxontinues on it's present course of spend spend, debt and more debt.

im a Chinese, my opinion is that many of you are overreaction about who will pass who in economy.
Whether the Chinese economy will pass the USA 's is not my goal as well as many Chinese people. What we want is just have a better life and clear air.So guys ,be easy.you could read some history books about China ,you will find that during a long time in histroy China is the most strongest country in the world ,but they have very few interesting in frighting with others ...

If the US keeps up with its political and military power, China won't surpass it.

China's GDP has grown to about half that of the US. In 2006 it was about a quarter of that of the US. It will slow due to several pressures but unless something dramatically changes, China will have the top GDP sooner than we may think.

Larger population, a surge of population away from traditional farming to city living, a desire for higher standards of living, an increased desire to enter the world economy. Kinda inevitable, don'tcha think? Especially when you compare it to the "outsourcing" of American industries that have been ongoing since WWII.

Although China's economy is far from the standard of US, the recession of US may bring US to the lowest point ever.

Never say never. But seeing how US manage to remain the economic superpower for so many years.... it can be difficult for China to surpass. Regardless of the possibility, 70% of US see China as economic superpower in 10 years:

This is probably what we are afraid of. I was discussing with my friends the other day about the categorization of "developed countries", "developing countries" and "underdeveloped countries". We all agreed that this categorization will always exist. The only changes will be the re-distribution of countries in each category. So, one day China can be more "developed" than one of the Western countries, thus becoming a "developed country". Anyways, this will not happen in at least 40 years +

The difference between Japan and China is in natural resources. Japan is completely tied to importing its resources. China does not have this same difficulty.
