Will Canada opt for any new driving restrictions for senior citizens?
black-shoulder ( Score Rank: #2 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) black-shoulder  |  will close on 31-Dec-2008 (83 days from now)
Many of us have seen drivers on the road who drive too fast or too slow. While there are restrictions to new and young drivers, senior citizens are currently not stipulated with any restrictions when it comes to driving.

The chair person at the Insurance Board of Canada, however, warns that "creative solutions" are needed, as seniors over the age of 75 are substantially more prone to accidents.

The problem, however, is a lot more complex than what it seems. Many senior citizens in rural areas will lose their mobility completely if they are not allowed to drive, while higher insurance targeted towards an age group can easily result in lawsuits. With this in mind, do you think there will be any new stipulations put forward against senior drivers by the end of 2008?

Elderly people are way too large a demography that any politician would sponsor such an unpopular (among them) law.

Higher insurance is already required for drivers who have a poor driving record. I think it is very difficult to charge senior citizens higher insurance just because their age group is more likely to be involved in accidents - that too can lead to some lawsuits.

Re-certification seems the least controversial, but I think certain driving restrictions could also be approved by the general public as well. So I am choosing "combination."

However, the end of 2008 is not too far off, maybe changes would not happen quickly enough...

I have to agree with Arthur, The legal ramifications with an outright ban would certainly clog the court system, with canada, like america with an aging populace. Recirtification, most likely, Higher rates a definate, as insurers seek to control their profits, some backlash regardless. American insurers will look to jump on a similiar bandwagon ASAP.

Banning 75+ drivers is definitely age discrimination. If the medical conditions do not allow one to drive, it's not about age at all. However, I would think an annual medical exam would be enough to prove one's driving ability. Higher insurance for the high risk group sounds fair too.

any ban is impossible, also driving restrictions are unlikely.

Re-certification with doctor's note sound like a feasible option.

It is always about $$$. So I vote for higher insurance premium.
