Murray only made it to the fourth round of the Australian Open, the quarter-finals of the French, the semis at Wimbledon and the fourth round of the US Open. Rafael Nadal took the Australian Open title, Roger Federer the French and Wimbledon, and Juan Martin Del Potro the US Open.

However, Murray had a good year. He became the highest-ranked British player since Fred Perry. Currently ranked 4th, he was ranked as high as 2nd for two weeks in 2009.

The only reason he beat Nadal was because Nadal played many matches before the U.S. Open.

Murray's game is not in the same class as Nadal, Federer, and Djokovic at this stage of his career. His backhand is as good as anybody, but his forehand lacks the aggressiveness that would allow him to seriously threaten the top 3 players. I won't say he can't win a grand slam in 2009, but at this point of his career, he would lose 9 out of 10 times when facing either one of the top 3.
