Will Airlines in North America Allow In-Flight Mobile Phone Calls?
nokia ( Score Rank: User did not make predictions in the last 30 days ) nokia  |  closed on 31-Dec-2008 (325 days ago)
The Dubai-based airline, whose flights includes services between London and Dubai, has introduced in-flight mobiles in 2006. In Apr 2008, Ryanair is understood to be planning mobile use on all European flights while Air France, BMI and the Portuguese carrier TAP are running six-month trials to gauge passenger reaction. Other airlines are not planning to allow calls. Lufthansa said yesterday that it would allow only internet usage after research showed that a large majority of passengers were opposed to the use of mobile phones.

In North America this year, will airlines allow us to call home from my cell phone while the airplane is flying thousands kilometers above the ground?

Looks like cell phone calls won't be allowed any time soon.

"Congressman Peter DeFazio (D-OR) introduced the HANG UP Act that, if passed, would make it illegal to talk on a cell phone while in-flight on U.S. airlines."

How about free wifi Internet connection on the plane instead?! It will make my flight a LOT more enjoyable for sure.

i like the idea, and believe the airline companies would offer the service in the competing env. just hope that would not be too annoying when too many phones ringing.

I don't know about telecommunication technology... Is it even possible to get a mobile phone signal when you are thousands of miles above the ground?

You mean in 2008? In that case, no. I think US will observe how well it works in Europe, and then they will make a decision in 2010 the earliest.

The Airline Industry in US and Canada are always slow. I guess we won't enjoy this leisure until 2010. In addition, it may be annoying to hear the phone call of passenger next to me.
