Wii starts showing dynamic in-game ads in 2008?
goog ( Score Rank: #5 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) goog  |  will close on 01-Jan-2009 (115 days from now)
Both Microsoft and Sony have either bought out or partner with in-game ads agent to push out dynamic in-game ads (probably uploaded to the game online in real-time). It is hard to say no to in-game ads nowadays because it seems to be the upcoming trend.

Do you think Nintendo will follow these two companies and start showing dynamic in-game ads? Like showing McDonald's ads in your next Mario Kart's track?

I suspect in-game ads will focus on product-placement rather than TV-type advertisements. A sensible company should be very reluctant to give any customer overt reason to get annoyed with it's product. Additionally, pushed ads that use some sort of new protocol or recognisable signal will very quickly get hacked out, while an in-game texture that just happens to have the Coke or KFC logo ...
On the other hand, Sony is not known to be sensible about it's customers or about what can and can't be done subtly with technology.

Hm... wonder if we will see Mario drinking from a can of coke to powerup, or Master Chief riding a BMW warthog in Halo.

In-game ads doesn't seem to fit the image of Wii now. Unless the income generated by dynamic ads is significant enough relative to sales of its games, then Nintendo won't consider in-game ads.

I am just wondering: does this have more to do with Nintendo, or does it have more to do with a games company such as Koei, Konami, Bandai, etc.? If individual software companies can determine whether they want to put in-game ads into their games, then the chance for that happening this year is very high. If, however, Nintendo gets a final say, then obviously, the negotiation process may take a little longer.

I think individual game developers/publisher has lots of control over "static" ads which get burned onto the DVD and is permanently in-game. But for "dynamic" ads which is more like web page banners, that will require Nintendo to step in because they are the platform provider and are in a better position to set up a dynamic ad platform for all developers to use. It is probably be a profit sharing plan kind of like the relationship between online ad networks with web site publishers.

Nintendo is on top and not struggling like Sony and MS, so they simply have no NEED to alienate their customers.

Well, maybe not for now. I think Wii will make more money selling peripheral controls and games, at least for now.

Maybe that will happen when Wii has more online games.
