The Norris Trophy is awarded annually to the top defenceman in the NHL. In recent years, this award has been awarded to a d-man who is also offensively-gifted, but that is not always the case.
The finalists were announced Tuesday, and it is led once again by Detroit Red Wing Niklas Lidstrom, the five-time winner, and ninth-time nominee. He is accompanied by Boston Bruin Zdeno Chara, and Calgary Flame Dion Phaneuf. Here are their stats: Phaneuf: 82 games, 17 goals, 43 assists, 60 points (5th among d-men), +12, 26:25 min per game. Lidstrom: 76gm, 10G, 60A, 70 pts (1st among d-men), +40 rating (1st among d-men) Chara: 77gm, 17G, 34A, 51pts, +14, 26:50min/gm A Lidstrom win will put him in 3rd place all time for the most Norris trophies won behind Bobby Orr (8) and Doug Harvey (7).
