This casual prediction is created in tribute to Trevor Linden, whose number 16 will be retired by the Vancouver Canucks on Dec 17, 2008.
Vancouver has officially retired two numbers and has discontinued the use of another. Stan Smyl, the long-term captain of the team and one of the mentors of Trevor Linden, had his number 12 retired. Wayne Maki, who died of brain cancer, has his number 11 discontinued (except Mark Messier insisted on using it...) Linden's #16 is rightfully retired - as he is 2nd in all-time scoring, goals, assists, and first in games played. He also led the Canucks in the memorable 1994 Stanley Cup run. Strictly by the numbers, another candidate is former Canuck captain Markus Naslund. He has scored more goals and had more points than Linden, and is among the top 3 in most statistical categories. Other possibilities include Pavel Bure, who had 3 60-goal seasons, Kirk McLean, the all-time games win leader... What do you think?

Naslund probably should not have ever been given the role of a captain, but that was the decision of the coaches, not him. He has carried himself with dignity over the years, and has followed the footsteps of Smyl and Linden as an active member in the community as well.
I would be proud to see a #19 jersey hanging side-by-side to Smyl's #12 and Linden's #16.
