According to news, Microsoft is interested in buying 5% of the privately held Facebook.
    http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5g9...

So, it shows MS is indeed interested. Will this lead to a possible buy-out?

It can work both ways. If MS is interested in buying Facebook stake, it shows it is in fact interested in having some control on the company. But this might also lower the chance of an full acquisition, because this also indicates MS might not want to spend that much money.

Seems like Yahoo strategy with social networking is forming strategic partnership instead of acquisition:
    http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol...

Yahoo just form a partnership with Bebo, the third largest social networking web site in US, in delivering targeted banner ads. I guess facebook and MySpace are big enough to have its ads delivering capabilities that they are not even interested in partnering with Yahoo. So, it seems Yahoo is less likely to acquire Facebook if it continues with the current strategy.

I think facebook has great potential to go IPO. It is one of the few social networking site that have good traffic and a good open software api at the same time. It is evolving into a software development platform now. This is something other sites like MySpace is missing.

Since Yahoo just spend $300 mil to buy BlueLithium, it is not unlikely to make another big purchase any time soon. I bet Facebook won't get acquired in 2007.

Even politicians are doing campaign in facebook:
    http://news.google.com/news?q=faceboo...

So, it seems like the success of a web platform is also correlated to how well it can generate news in the media. Look at facebook. It made a lot of noise in the media recently, and it generates a lot of interests from users, other e-biz, and investors.

If there is a company who needs good social network traffic, I will say it is Yahoo.

Employers are complaining about office facebook users who spend all the time "networking" with their buddies, and this costs the employers lots of $$$:

Some say facebook is worth $6bil now. Isn't it getting a bit expensive to acquire now? On the other hand, it seems like Yahoo is really lack of any results in building a social network with a good enough size to compete in this market today. So, the easiest way out for Yahoo is probably pay for that $6bil and buy facebook. Who knows? Yahoo's stock might go up more than 6bil right after the acquisition, just like when Google got YouTube.

I don't see any company would buy out Facebook. I still do not see the value of facebook yet. Also I cannot categorize this site. What they are doing? Can they really do social network? humm.... I think it just another friendster that will dry out in near future.

I know friends who are quite addicted to facebook. I guess it is the aspect of knowing what your friends are doing all the time, that makes people want to login contantly. I used to use friendster, and I am too lazy too switch to facebook now. And facebook does have its audience. Neither Google, Yahoo, or MS has built a social network that is even close to this size. So, if none of these big players decide to buy facebook now, it might get too pricy later.

I am seeing that more Web2.0 sites want to promote themselves on Facebook. It seems to be a wonderful channel for word-of-mouth marketing

It is quite amazing Facebook had been in operation for 3 years already. I wonder if it started out as one of those "basement" project. But I think Facebook has been doing a lot of right things compared to other social network like friendster and myspace.

As shadow of lawsuit hovers Facebook now, I don't see any acquisition will occur in Q3. And it seems that the Founder wants to bring the company to IPO.
