What is ZiiTrend?
Which Canadian team will sign the most number of unrestricted free agents?
black-shoulder ( Score Rank: #6 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) black-shoulder  |  will close on 31-Aug-2008 (20 hours from now)
The free agent market in the NHL officially opens on July 1, 2008. Starting on this day, un-restricted free agents (UFAs) can begin signing with various teams, most likely the highest bidders.

While none of the Canadian teams have the resources of teams like the Detroit Red Wings or the New York Rangers, the salary cap does create a more level-playing field. Teams can sign an unlimited number of UFAs, as long as the team's overall salary falls under the salary cap.

Which of the Canadian team do you think will sign the most number (note, we are talking about sheer numbers, not impact players, not salaries offered to these players) of UFAs between the months of July and August (I understand signing can continue after August, but let's just use August as the cut-off for this prediction)?

    predicted: [ Most Likely ] [ 50% ] Vancouver Canucks

A quick count from the sportsnet.ca website shows that each of the Canadian teams have signed the following number of players (this include re-signing of players whose contracts have expired, and minor league players to two-way contracts that would allow them to play with the big club should needed):

    Calgary: 7; Edmonton: 3; Montreal: 6; Ottawa: 6; Toronto: 6; Vancouver: 9

The Canucks have signed the most number of bodies, but with the exception to Dimitra, they are all fourth-line players or minor-leaguers... :(

The teams that had the most disappointing season last year is most likely going to make the most number of changes... and if you look at these six teams here, the Canucks have disappointed more than any other team. Adding to the fact that they have a new GM who promises drastic changes, I think the Canucks would be active in the free agent market this year. Whether that translate into any on-ice success, however, is anyone's guess.
