When will Google release the Knol encyclopedia (similar to Wikipedia)?

I guess Google isn't too happy with the fact that wikipedia entry always show up in its top 5 query results. And potentially, people will bypass the google search box completely and use the wikipedia search box instead. Google deal with this by announcing the new encyclopedia service Knol (meaning unit of knowledge). Right now, it is in private beta. When we will see this sevice available for the public?

    Google may want to create more ad inventory for its Adsense. Notice that Wikipedia does not use any Google's services but Google keeps directing traffic to Wikipedia. Google should not aim to replace Wiki, but create a high-end niche for expert information (just like Ask.com)

    I suppose Google wants to release it when there are at least SOME content in it. Otherwise, it will just be a blank encyclopedia. And filling the content takes time, even for giant like Google.

    Google is getting more like the old Microsoft now. Killing of competitions without mercy. Not even non-profit org like wikipedia is spared.
