Vista damage to Windows market share
Tempus ( Score Rank: User did not make predictions in the last 30 days ) Tempus  |  closed on 31-Dec-2008 (325 days ago)
There can be no doubt that Vista is a trainwreck. But opinions vary a great deal about whether or not is has damaged the brand "Windows" and the market share of Windows in the OS market.

Some people say that users are leaving in droves, and the market share of OS X has been rising strongly during the past two years.
Other people claim that users and especially corporations are simply sticking with XP, and the rising share of Apple users is due to good offers by Apple and compatability with other interesting Apple products (iPod, iPhone) as well as taking a bite more out of the Linux than the Windows market.

What do you think? How many percentage points of market share will Windows have lost due to Vista when the smoke has cleared and all is said and done?

Since we can measure market share and loss of it, but not reliably measure the reasons, this is a casual prediction.

Windows market share is currently ~90%, with a ~1.5% loss during 2008. Vista's share of that is ~15%.

I think any drop in sales or the MS monopoly has more to do with the competition just doing better and better. A Mac is better than a PC in many operation fronts, and the Mac is finally beginning to drop a little bit in price. I think that has a lot more to do with Windows sale going a little sluggish than Vista.

Having said that... personally, I'm happy with the use of XP. Unless Windows further shoot itself in the foot by making changes that make it impossible for me to continue to use XP as my OS, I am not leaving Windows to go Mac.

No doubt that Vista is dead in the water financially. (Will Microsoft _ever_ sell enough copies before the next version to recoup development costs?)
However, most people are quite happy to stick with XP. If there is any haemorrhaging of users to Linux/Mac, it's going to be sllloooooooowwwwwwww.

No I don't think so. MS has so much to do with Vista for sure, but it remains strong in monopolizing the market.
