Vancouver: Shut Down the Supervised Injection Site?
umbanana ( Score Rank: User did not make predictions in the last 30 days ) umbanana  |  was scored on 02-Sep-2008 (444 days ago)
Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) in partnership with the PHS Community Services Society opened North America's first legal supervised injection site (Insite) scientific research pilot project in September 2003. To operate legally, Health Canada granted VCH a three-year operating exemption under Section 56 of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, and has provided $500,000 per year to support the scientific research pilot project. The BC Ministry of Health provided $1.2 million to renovate the former retail space, and provides operating funding through Vancouver Coastal Health.

Ottawa allows the clinic to operate under a special exemption of the Narcotics Control Act, but so far has refused to make the exemption permanent. The latest permit extension expires at the end of June and supporters of Insite hope the court case will test the federal government's power to close the facility.

The site is still running. The federal government is appealing a B.C. Supreme Court decision that struck down sections of Canada's drug laws as unconstitutional because they prevent the facility, known as Insite, from operating.

The judge gave Ottawa until June 30, 2009, to bring the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act in line with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and gave Insite a constitutional exemption to stay open in the meantime.

Since when does placating a unruly child cause them to change? For the Druggies it is a real candy store, for the rest of the populace why cannot they understand this group is not the productive portion of society, the group that is out to help others, to do humanitarian acts, but to be a drag on society, to lead others into a life of misery, and depravation. After so long a time the chemicals change their brain, their motives, their actions, and not for the good of others or themselves. Spend the money to put them thru rehab not more free drugs. Do the people who are living off the gov't funds want a change --No way--And there won't be a change any time soon.

I don't think it will close down unless we have a new mayor who is brave enough to shut it down. There are lots of pressure from the local society against the closure of the site. If Sam is going to be the next mayor, the next step he would do is to give free drug to the addict.... sigh...
In my opinion, I don't think injection site can help addicts quit the habbit. It is just a measure to restrict those addicts to one area. This can make the city look nice before 2010 olympic.

sad that injection solution aims to only improve the outlook of the city but not their lives.

They should, but they won't. There has been no scientific evidence that safe injection sites would lead to people quitting a drug habit, or even before referred to quit their addiction. The Vancouver safe injection site, for example, has but referred 1 single person to drug rehab since its opening.

Vancouver has long trumpeted this "harm reduction" approach. IMHO, it is harm EXTENSION rather than reduction - what good does it to do a person using drugs if his/her habit is allowed to continue, even if he/she will not die from an overdose? I have actually questioned a city council's representative on this, to which I have received a ridiculous answer of "anyone who feels Insite should close just have no compassion to drug addicts dying because of an overdose." When I press that lady to answer my specific question, she refuses to answer me directly.

I can see more Vancouver ppl want to shut down the injection site. Those are also the people who don't speak up unless the injection sites are close to their home/work.

I would be great if someone find the stats about the effectiveness of the program. I quite doubt its goal and effectiveness, but also realized that it is no quick fix for drug addicts in Vancouver.
