Vancouver - Recovery of Stolen Reid Art at UBC by Aug?

The University of B.C. is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the safe recovery of $2 million worth of artworks by iconic B.C. artist Bill Reid.

A dozen pieces of jewelry by Reid, 11 of them gold, were stolen from the Museum of Anthropology at UBC sometime on the night of May 23, along with three pieces of gold Mexican jewelry.

University and museum officials fear that the items could be melted down for the gold they contain or wind up in the hands of an unscrupulous collector.

    Since June 11, all but two of the stolen artworks by famed Haida artist Bill Reid are now in the hands of the police came as joyful relief to the University of B.C.'s Museum of Anthropology, which had feared the pieces might never be seen again.

    It shouldn't be a simple YES/NO questions. However, as most of us voted NO, I would answer NO as well :p

    In what has to be considered a surprising development, a "portion" of the stolen artifacts have been recovered by the RCMP. As of Monday, June 9, the police refused to say how many of the stolen items were recovered. They would only go as far as saying that the items that were recovered were still "intact," and that the police is still looking for suspect(s) to arrest and lay charges to.

    Sadly, I don't think these artifacts would be recovered... the unfortunate thing in our world is that anything that is worth money is desperately wanted by these crazed collectors who have lots of money, but very little integrity. I agree with Homer - the items are probably already in another part of the world now, being sold solicited on the black market for a lot of cash.

    I bet the jewelry is worth tons of money. It is probably in the other side of the world now. To hard to get back. If the thefts decide to melt the gold, they are destroying precious art works. That's hard to forgive.

    Haida artist Bill Reid led a renaissance of native art in Canada in the 1950s and '60s and his contemporary designs are recognized the world over. The Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art opened in his honour in Vancouver earlier this month. Reid died in 1998.

    Perhaps a collector hired someone to steal them. It's hard to know the trace and get them back.
