What is ZiiTrend?
Ubuntu still the top Linux distribution by the end of Q2 2008?
goog ( Score Rank: User did not make predictions in the last 30 days ) goog  |  was scored on 08-Jul-2008 (501 days ago)
This prediction is inspired by this news:

"How big can Ubuntu get?"
http://blogs.zdnet.com/op...
"If you think desktop Linux has a future then Ubuntu is Da Bomb and Mark Shuttleworth is Da Man.
Nearly half the Linux machines checked so far in the Open Source Census are running Ubuntu, and a new, even easier-to-use release comes out tomorrow."

According to DistroWatch.com, Ubuntu is currently the top (most popular) Linux distribution:
http://distrowatch.com/st...
By the end of Q2 2008, we will use this same page to verify the result. We will use the "Last 1 Month" ranking for verification.

o infact on the "Last 1 Mont" ranking, it's openSUSE first and Ubuntu second; whereas Ubuntu is the top distribution in the last 3, 6 and 12-month periods.

I used to use Redhat (1998), then went to Mandrake (before it became Mandriva) because they had more up to date software, and a somewhat better user experience. Then they became commercialised and started releasing crappy, buggy versions/releases. I tried to go back to Redhat - they'd thrown out most of their gui configuration tools. Tried Debian - just too much effort to configure, though I liked the stability and the higher level of control of the deb version system.
Then I found Ubuntu - stability of Debian, excellent GUI tools, both for everyday use and configuration, up-to-date software and a humongous selection of applications, and best yet, the parent company isn't trying to squeeze it so hard that the goodness falls out - the opposite in fact.
It would take a LOT of awesome-goodness to overcome that, and if such awesome-goodness showed up in the opensource world, it'd be a pretty good chance that it'd end up in Ubuntu anyway.

Well said. Putting together such awesome distribution is not a easy task especially in the opensource world. Ubuntu is big step in consumer acceptance of Linux. I hope it can get more exposure in the consumer world. Lots of people still think Microsoft Windows is the only OS in the world.

I wonder if Dell still has the Ubuntu option for their laptops.

Looking at the recent stats, it is quite likely Ubuntu will stay at the top for a long long time.

Ubuntu will rule the desktop world. Even redhat announces that it will give up competing in the desktop market.

Yeah, too be the OLPC project (http://www.ziitrend.com/predict/on/ol...)
might switch to MS Windows... This is a sad news for Linux. I am sure Microsoft try to give out these OLPC windows license almost for free, in an attempt to brain-wash the kids in the 3rd world countries. I say, that's a pretty good long term investment.

Ubuntu has picked up lots of momentum in the last year or so due to the ease of use/installation (IMO). I think it will only get better.
