Taiwan Joins WHO in 2008?
ocRabbit ( Score Rank: User did not make predictions in the last 30 days ) ocRabbit  |  will close on 31-Dec-2008 (79 days from now)
Taiwan's new president, Ma, says he will reapply for a 12th time for a seat on the World Health Organization in what could be his final slap at China. Beijing insists Taiwan is a province of China and, as such, is ineligible for inclusion either in the United Nations General Assembly or the World Health Organization. WHO voted 148-17 in Geneva in May 2007 to bar Taiwan despite a particularly vigorous campaign by the island. China and its scores of diplomatic allies blocked the bid. Taiwan must apply by April 19 to be considered, a Taiwan foreign ministry spokeswoman said.

Will Taiwan be granted a seat in WHO in 2008?

For Taiwan's strategy, the first move is to boost up the economy - that means developing tight economical connection with China while keeping low-profile in political issues.

Ma might try, but won't push too hard to get into WHO.

No way mainland China will allow Taiwan to re-enter the international scene... the absolute BEST scenario China would allow is to let Taiwan gain the "observer" status with W.H.O. - as for getting an actual membership, probably not within this generation's time.

No way. 147-17 last time. Taiwan won't stand a chance this time either. I don't see Ma pushing too hard and risk damaging the future relationship with China.

There is a slim chance before Olympics if they press hard enough on Beijing, but much less chance after the event.
