Many Koreans enjoy dog meat despite the ban. Somewhere between two and four million dogs are consumed in South Korea every year, but the slaughtering and processing is carried out in dirty environments and poses a risks to diners' health. In Apr 2008, the Seoul government has proposed reclassifying dogs as livestock so it can set food safety standards.
Back to 1988 Seoul Olympics, it had passed a law banning the sale of dog meat and strictly enforced it to improve the country's image. However, shortly after the games ended, the government relaxed enforcement, and dog meat restaurants were soon back in business. Local and International Animals Groups are working hard to stop passing the law. What law will be passed by mid-June?
