Paper version of Wikipedia: Will it be available to the US in Q2 2008?
goog ( Score Rank: #31 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) goog  |  was scored on 03-Jul-2008 (141 days ago)
This prediction is inspired by this news:

"Wikipedia: coming soon to a (German) bookstore near you!"
http://arstechnica.com/ne...

'Wikipedia is crawling off the web and onto a printed page near you, at least if you happen to live in Germany. Media conglomerate Bertelsmann (which owns Random House, among other things) has announced plans to put out a stripped-down offline version of the German Wikipedia later this year with the goal of appealing to "new target groups, including young people."

Let's predict if the paper version of Wikipedia will be available to readers in the US. We will consider this prediction a "YES" as long as there is an English printed version of wikipedia that officially available to US buyers.

I suppose we are referring to the printed English version of wikipedia right? In that case the answer is no. It is only available in German.

wikipedia on paper is a crappy idea. And not very environmental friendly too. I agree that CD/DVD version is many times better. But still, most of the computers nowadays have Internet connectivity. You will have to point a gun at my head to have me run a DVD version encyclopedia.

Sorry people, adjusting my prediction. Just found out that Wikipedia releases CD versions. I think that this is most likely to be more prevalent than a hardcover book.

It may not reach many sales, and it will most definitely be incomplete (a collection of the most popular articles).

I'm surprised it is even happening anywhere in the world in an age where conservation is becoming such an important thing. And since Wikipedia's entries are being edited all the time, wouldn't the printed version become obsolete even before it hits the bookstore?

Although I hate the idea of printed version of such dynamic information, I don't see why it can't be available to the US.
