Online Videos: Rely more on Streaming or BitTorrent?
ospere ( Score Rank: #172 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) ospere  |  closed on 01-Jan-2010 (79 days ago)
Comcast's decision to cap monthy broadband usage at 250GB is being decried as the end of the Internet as we know it. Maybe so, but it can also be seen as the dawn of the Streaming Era. As the Olympics drew to a close with big numbers - 75.5 million streams (NBCOlympics.com), 40 million (BBC), another 130 million from the European Broadcasting Union, and 100 million Chinese viewers - the networks were already moving on by serving the Democratic National Convention in HD.

As the video is getting larger (eg. huge size at HD resolution), will we rely more on streaming data than downloading data via BitTorrent?

Should be in the 50/50 as there services that apply BT-technology to their streaming software (for example Zattoo), but streaming is the way to go.

Bittorrent - useful for downloading massive files that you will watch later, as file parts are (usually) accessed randomly.
Streaming - useful for downloading files that you want to watch immediately, as file parts are accessed sequentially.
As most users (youtube, live broadcasts) prefer to "watch-while-downloading", streaming has the advantage at the moment for video. When the bandwidth, pricing (of network access and content) and licensing of movies becomes available to the common public, bittorrent, or bittorrent-like protocols will start to rise.

I understand that the files are getting bigger, putting more pressure on streaming... but at the same time, isn't band width increasing quickly as well?

yeah .. but that means it's more possible with real-time streaming.

As we are moving on to mobile, I think streaming fits better than BT. Streaming is more convenient for previewing the content.
