GM plans to roll out about 100 hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles this year for road testing around the U.S. in its largest program to date embaracing the technology, which traces its roots to the U.S. space program in the 1960s and 1970s. Larry Burns, GM's vice president for research and development and strategic planning, called on the energy industry and government to step up and help automakers make the futuristic vehicles a reality, in part by opening hydrogen fueling stations to encourage their use.
