Number of hydrogen fueling stations in North America by the end of 2008.

GM plans to roll out about 100 hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles this year for road testing around the U.S. in its largest program to date embaracing the technology, which traces its roots to the U.S. space program in the 1960s and 1970s. Larry Burns, GM's vice president for research and development and strategic planning, called on the energy industry and government to step up and help automakers make the futuristic vehicles a reality, in part by opening hydrogen fueling stations to encourage their use.

As more manufacturers follow GM's lead in the hydrogen car initiative, we should expect to see more hydrogen fueling station scattered around US and Canada.

We will use the latest number in the National Hydrogen Association database to verify the result:

Some recent research suggests the possibility of developing biopetrol by catalytic reaction of raw plant stock (cellulose and all) in under 20 minutes. I think most research investors are going to wait to see how that pans out before the hydrogen economy fires up.

The increase in numbers of hydrogen pumps should be proportional to the numbers of hydrogen cars on the road. And this year, GM will release 100 hydrogen car for road testing in US. That's not a lot.
