NTT DoCoMo Bio-Sensing Cell Phones - Will It Be Useful?
fireeater ( Score Rank: User did not make predictions in the last 30 days ) fireeater  |  closed on 28-Apr-2008 (572 days ago)
Researchers in Japan have demonstrated one part of an envisaged molecular level system that might one day enable cell phones to keep a regular watch on their owners' health. NTT DoCoMo hopes some future cell phones will contain "DNA chips," devices capable of analyzing molecules from the user's body, to provide a warning about a possible virus, high levels of stress or other factors that might affect health.

The development is just one piece of the research required before such a system can be commercialized. NTT DoCoMo's Ichikoshi expects the entire system to be feasible in a laboratory about five years from now but not ready for commercial use for perhaps another five years after that.

This CAN be useful. But I think in the first few product releases, it can only afford to include stupid features like scanning your body temperature, and detect 2 viruses. What they are trying to do is a portable health monitoring system that can connect online. This can take up to 10 years to be successful.

That reminds me the "hi-tech" watch I bought when I was a kid. The Japanese watch I had could sense body temperature, heart beat, etc. It sounds the next killer-app (after camera) can be added to a cellphone.
