The Queen of England believes in duty to her country. She will die on the throne. So unless she dies before 2010, she will remain the monarch.

Queen Elizabeth II and the English people have a strong connection with each other. I don't think Elizabeth is going to step down until she has to. So barring injury, very poor health or death, 'Libby will be still kicking it as Queen in 2010.
As for Prince William or Henry, despite his lack of public popularity, Prince Charles has been training for the job since he was born, he's from a long line of traditionalists - he's gonna take the job, even if he's 70+ at the time.

If Queen Elizabeth II dies, Prince Charles is the first person who has the right to inherit the throne. However, he is, for the most part, not popular with the British public, and apparently has limited interest in being the king. Together with his age, I think he would very likely decline the throne, and just let Prince William, his son, take it instead.

I agree. Prince William's image is much better than Prince Charles.

    Bushhhh,

These comments are routinely made in England, especially after each round of bad PR by the imperial family. Fact is, the British are paying heavy taxes to support the monarchy, and when economy isn't good, and the royal family is not behaving in a dignified way, there would be some pressure.

That said, the British are a very proud group, and wouldn't want to lose face by abolishing their queen/king unless something really, really bad has transpired (e.g. if someone actually has proof that Princess Diana was ordered to be murdered).

I always think Princess Diana was murdered. But no one would be interested in proving this to be true.

New Year's Day in 2010 is not that far away... I think (and in some way, I hope) QEII will stay for that time. Prince Charles has no chance of taking the throne - too much bad PR. Prince Henry is a train-wreck... which leaves Prince William as the apparent heir.

By the way, there are talks about the complete abolishment of monarchy in England too... Does anyone think that will happen when QEII is done?
