"It was an unprecedented and largely unexpected move by Nokia, which had for months allowed speculation that it may join the Open Handset Alliance and back Android. Now it's taking steps to own Symbian, and to put away its competition"
Nokia after acquiring Symbian announced that it will establish a Symbian Foundation, open source the OS and welcome carrier as members. Right now, the members are AT&T, Broadcom, Digia, EA Mobile, Ericsson, Freescale Semiconductor, Fujitsu, LG, Motorola, NTT DoCoMo, Orange, Plusmo, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, STMicroelectronics, Teleca, Texas Instruments, T-Mobile. http://www.betanews.com/a... These are almost the same list as the LiMo Foundation membership. So you can see it is mostly a battle between Google and Nokia. And other companies are just trying to watch as the battle unfolds. Let's predict which foundation will manage to get its platform to gain more market share by 2010.

Android:
Has a fair number of people behind it.
Has GOOGLE behind it for crying out loud.
Free AND Open -> more users and more software.
Symbian:
Main name of fame is Nokia, who sound to me like they're chucking a hissy-fit.
Currently not free -> takes at least a year to free up a software.
Hmm. Just wish I'd found this prediction earlier. Any chance of reopening it until the end of the year. :)
Google's advantage is the potential integration with its web services. And Nokia advantage is that Symbian is simply bigger, and more mature.
