Large Hadron Collider Ends The World??
adue ( Score Rank: #85 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) adue  |  was scored on 23-Sep-2008 (106 days ago)
The upcoming experiments at the Large Hadron Collider have sparked fears among the public that the LHC particle collisions might produce doomsday phenomena, including dangerous microscopic black holes and strange matter. The scientists are being besieged by phone calls and emails from people who fear the world will end next Wednesday, when the gigantic atom smasher starts up.

Two CERN-commissioned safety reviews have examined these concerns and concluded that the experiments at the LHC present no danger and that there is no reason for concern, a conclusion expressly endorsed by the American Physical Society, the world's second largest organization of physicists.

Will the LHC end the world before Dec 2008?

This is just another ridiculous attempt by religion to curb science and create another wave of fear. I can't wait until it starts and proves that these people are idiots. They're probably the same ones who started and believed in Y2K and cower in fear of the Apocalypse every random year, waiting until something actually happens so they can say, "Told ya!" Never mind the billions of times they're wrong and that if you predict something will happen every single time then you're bound to get lucky once and you prove nothing. Evil? I hope these people get some sense drilled into their heads. They're probably the same people who think it's ok to hate gays and Jews and minorities. Who's evil now? God people are dumb. I look forward to scientists flaunting their lack of care for such nonsense.

From what I've heard, the test is soooooooo small in scale, I don't think it can cause anything major.

The LHC is a £4.4 billion particle accelerator that involves around 10,000 scientists and engineers worldwide. I think it's OK to operate.

It's funny to read about how people reacts to the experiment:

The head of public relations, James Gillies, says he gets tearful phone calls, pleading for the £4.5 billion machine to stop. "They phone me and say: "I am seriously worried. Please tell me that my children are safe," said Gillies. Emails also arrive every day that beg for reassurance that the world will not end, he explained.

Others are more aggressive. "There are a number who say: "You are evil and dangerous and you are going to destroy the world."
