The RepRap project has been gathering steam for some time now, with a release of a viable design for a 3D additive rapid prototyping machine that can build it's own parts. Additionally they have designs for a RapStrap machine - a machine that can be hand built and is capable of building the reprap.

Additionally, several companies offer 3D printers affordable by small manufacturing businesses.

How likely is it that we will have affordable home 3D print machines in two years time, say under $1000?

That is just plain weird Can you imagine printing out your 3D project! If you could print McDonalds with this printer it would probably taste like paper and ink

Dimension 3D Printers are priced for office use, so you can create onsite perfect working models directly from your CAD, made of tough ABS plastic that can be sanded, milled, even painted.

Take the pressure off yourself. You’re not trying to write the next bestseller. Your writing simply has to be clear, fact based, audience centered,

3D printers have been around for industrial use roughly a decade, but they have been matched with outrageous price tags. The first models to hit the market were priced at about the same as a fully loaded Mercedes S-Class,

3D Printers are less costly variations of RP technology that are positioned as a design tool to create inexpensive models early in the design process.

oWell, I love the WSJ video you posted. Although the existing 3D printer looks pretty rudimentary. But I can see how it can get really advanced in 5 years time. Although I cannot think of a lot of things I can print. But if the printer can dual as a plastic and electric circuit board printer, then I can see a lot of opportunities in downloadable "electronic" on the Internet.

Wow, I can see this as a perfect way to build Japanese anime models and action figures. People can buy or download some CAD file online, and then "print" out a cool Batman or Naruto model. That is something!

But if the cardridges are too expensive, then that's out of the question.
