VIENNA (Thomson Financial) - Austrians will go to the polls on Sept. 28 in an early general election after all parliamentary parties signalled their approval of that date on Tuesday, the government said.
The current left-right coalition, made up of the Social Democrat SPOe and the conservative OeVP parties, agreed on the last Sunday of September as the date for new elections, a spokesman for Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer, Stefan Hirsch, told Agence France-Presse. The announcement came just a day after OeVP chief and the government's finance minister Wilhelm Molterer had announced that his party could no longer work with the Social Democrats.
