How will Japan & Korea Resolve the Territory Dispute?
Arthur ( Score Rank: #31 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) Arthur  |  will close on 01-Jan-2009 (79 days from now)
The islands are known as Dokdo in Korean and Takeshima in Japanese. The group of 33 islets is about 87 kilometers (54 miles) east of South Korea's Ullung Island and 157 kilometers northwest of the Oki islands, which are part of Japan's Shimane Prefecture. South Korea has controlled the disputed territory since the 1950s.

On July 14, Japan's Education Ministry announced earlier its plan to define Dokdo as part of Japanese territory in a teacher's guidebook, which is expected to influence upcoming middle school textbooks to be published by Japan's civilian publishers and also serve as a guideline for teachers, to be used from 2012 despite Seoul's repeated opposition. Immediately, South Korea recalled the ambassador in Japan, and strongly denounced Japan's territorial claim over the disputed islets of Dokdo.

i don't think they would resolve the issue ever - but there will be a negotiation very soon to restore the relationship. will they bring the issue to the international court (if any)?

This prediction will close next year. That's half a year from now. Nothing will change in such a short time. There will only be exchange of words between the two countries. I won't even say that's going to be "negotiations". But that's the closest outcome.

Unlike Diao Yu Tao, which is in dispute between mainland China, Taiwan, and Japan, the issue of Dokdo is quite different. Korea, unlike China and Taiwan, regularly have military personnels there. If taken to international court, that is actually one of the arguing points that have going for them. And the Korean government is much stronger in its stance when compared to either governments east and west of the Taiwan strait. The negotiation probably will go on for quite some time still, but at present, Korea owns the island without formal Japanese recognition only.

Agreed. Formally, the island is owned by Korea anyway. And I don't see Japan agreeing to that either.
